The University of Hong Kong

Mentorship Inauguration Ceremony-cum-Book Launch

on 19 November 2009

Speech by Dr. C. H. Leong Chairman, Council of the University of Hong Kong

No one would doubt that a University is NOT a bastion for higher learning, an institute to advance ones knowledge.

But, to me, a University is also a bridge between the school and the society. A training ground for a person who have been living in a protected environment pampered by your family, moving in the world of the unknown.

A proper University education is not just an acquisition of knowledge, not just a training for a trade or a profession, but a means to prepare a person to adapt to the society and be able to contribute.

Knowledge acquire through books, lectures etc. may some how be dull and lack lustre. A chance to discuss what you learn in classroom with someone who has put that knowledge into practice will bring life back to the dull books. Often time, it will open up your visions to a particular direction.

Along the same line, both books and lectures will not equip you enough for the society¡¦s needs. Have a chance to communicate closely with people who have experience with the society will. You don¡¦t have to discuss just your class works, you can discuss with other things, including the CE, constitution etc.

This is the concept of Mentors and Mentees. To the University students, your mentors are your teachers outside the confinement of the University, your peers, your friends and your confidante, your advisors or even your life buoys when you need support and help.

What is there for the mentor? Don¡¦t look at it as you have contributed your time. Don¡¦t even look at it as you have helped a mentee. But look at it as the things you gained by having a mentee. Because of the mentee, you will be involved with the progress of University and this update yourself to the current knowledge of your trade or profession. You too will start to understand the thinking and needs of the young generations. Such understanding is the cornerstone of intergenerational harmony. There are too many unhappiness and negative issues in the society and this for sure need harmony.

To the University, you too have much to gain. You are closing the bonds of you alumni. You are pulling down the Berlin Wall that divides the juniors and the seniors. More, you are providing a ¡§total¡¨ education to the students you graduate, and bring to life and reality of our motto: ¡§Sapienta et virtus¡¨. I believe you ¡X the mentors and the mentees have developed good relationships, it¡¦s all about sharing, encouragement and development. You support each other, more than teaching. You benefit for personal growth, career development or even in spiritual fulfillment.

I salute the programme and hope it will continue as a part of our curriculum. I salute the publication of this book. It is the best proof of Social Learning transforming into Social Capital.
